Can I get a glass of sweet tea?

I was born on the Gulf Coast of Florida in an Air Force Hospital. Three months later I hopped (ok, my mom carried me) on my first jet. One might say I have been moving every sense. My great-aunt Gin moved to Florida as a teenager. She set up shop in Leesburg, first with a guy that rode a motorcycle and then with the chief of police. She would regularly complain to me that she had lived in Florida for decades and was still considered a transplant. Her complaint continued with: “…but YOU! You got sand in your shoes and will always be a Florida cracker.”

That jet I spoke of dropped me off in the Shenandoah Valley of the great Commonwealth of Virginia…still the south, but a bit too far north for a soul serving life as a Florida cracker. At least once a year I return to the (Happy) Valley where I get drunk on real sweet tea. And if the tea wasn’t responsible enough for a few extra pounds, there’s potatoes and tons of meat and homemade ice creams and the pie (OH HALLELUAI!! THE FRESH HOT FRUIT PIES! Can I get an “Amen!” from all you all good Southern Baptist?). I am going to have to start booking two seats for my derriere on the plane ride back to Japan and then join a Sumo stable.

While sitting in a rocking chair on the back porch, sucking down sweet tea and enjoying a sun set, something truly strange crossed the table in front of me. I was shocked because something that wasn’t edible was on the table. It was a copy of Garden and Gun. God Bless Dixie! Only someone from the good ol’ South (high on sweet tea, of course) could produce something like this. I must admit, I did a double; then pondered the obvious juxtaposition. I took another sip of tea, which cleared my head and realized that few things could be paired in such harmony.

Man I wish I had me a glass of that now!
