Its clear from the emails that everyone is worried about the spoilers’ daily menu. So I guess I will have to supplement Sachan’s posts.

For breakfast, David had oatmeal. I realize this is not a surprise to anyone who knows David. I did not photograph that. Pam though made scones this morning so here’s a picture of them before they disappeared.

For lunch we walked down to our favorite soba (buckwheat noodles) restaurant. It has this really cool koi pond in the corner. I think the spoilers were relieved to find that this was not a catch and eat restaurant. Everyone got hot soba except for Samantha who prefers them cold with shredded nori (seaweed) on them.

On the walk back to the house we stopped at the famous Yanaka Ginza mangu shop. Mangu is a small flour based pastry with anko (sweetened red bean paste) inside. Different parts of the country have different variations on this theme. The Yanaka ones are unique because they are soft (kind of like a soft molasses cream cookie or a really soft gingerbread cookie) with an overt brown sugar taste. They are a bit too sweet for my own personal liking. Sachan loves them. And well, I think you can tell what Carolyn thought of them by this picture.

We swung by my favorite fish shop on the way back to the house. They had these beautifully small squid that I stood and drooled over, but Pam wouldn’t let me buy them…man I like grocery shopping without her. So we picked up some lovely fresh fish and some clams for Sachan. The old camera I was using died somewhere between the Sachan eating clams and the really nice picture I took of the pan fried fish, but you get the idea.

Anyway, I think its safe to say the spoilers aren’t starving yet.
Really enjoying the pictures and journal of Carolyn and Dave’s visit. Can’t believe how grown up Samantha looks!
The spoilers look ggod.Doesn’t look like they are losing any weight yet. Must be pretty warm as your dad had his coat open but I’m sure he had many layers underneath it.I enjoyed the pics also.Happy Spring Becky
