Chicken Scratch

I was working with a student yesterday when I was handed a paper that I needed to sign.  I threw down my signature as I usually do with precision and flare.   The child reached over, took the paper out of my hand as I started to hand it to a friendly administrator, with eyes agape, he cried,”What is that?”  (I should point out that he said this without any articulation errors, thanks to his skills therapist.)

“That, to the untrained eye, may look like chicken scratch.  But, in fact, it is a piece of art which just so happens to double as my signature.”

“But I can’t read it!”  he complained with more perfect articulation.

“Exactly!  That is what makes it art!  Much like a Jackson Pollock.”
