The backpack by the door

If you can figure out your suitcase,

you figure out your life.

Diane von Furstenberg

At 12:14 today my phone did something it hasn’t done in nearly a year:  it started vibrating letting out what I like to describe as a submarine warning signal.  There is the flash of disbelief, still.  The message on my phone read, in Japanese, Prepare for earthquake in 16 seconds.  I waited with a seventh grader, counting down the seconds.  It was a good thing the alarm went off, because I feel certain I would not have noticed the subtle shaking of the our room as a result of the 5.8 magnitude earthquake had my phone not alerted me to a need to sink to depth com five.

Don’t get me wrong, I am glad that phone is smart enough to detect earthquakes 15 seconds before the shock waves hit me…just like I am glad I have orange backpacks by the front door in case we need to evacuate…you know, provided we are actually home when the big one hits.

I think I have the orange backpack figured out…but I won’t know until I get a chance to use it.  My suitcase, well, friends and family don’t call me the “packing nazi” for nothing…I have figured out what needs to go in my suitcase…and it ain’t much.

I ran across this quote today when watching this video clip

I found it posted on my favorite site, thekidshouldseethis  I check it at least once a week.  A parent  surfs high and low and posts videos that the parent’s co-curator, a three year old, “should definitely see.”  Lots of music, science and stop-motion (ok, in my opinion, too much stop-motion) videos.  There is even the occasional Sesame Street sighting…old school Sesame Street i.e. no Elmo crap.  I highly recommend you swing by the sight and sample the videos, but be prepared to waste some time.  Oh, and if you have a kid handy, why not see what they have to say about what your watching.

As for the suitcase, well, since it’s already packed, why not head off for a

Sunny Day
Sweepin’ the clouds away
On my way to where the air is sweet

Can you tell me how to get,
How to get to Sesame Street
