Life on an island is always interesting. Life on an island setting above the juncture of three teutonic plates in the Northern Pacific ups the excitement level from time to time.
When the big one hits Tokyo it will be a major news story. Given that there is a 90% chance that a major earthquake will hit the Tokyo Metropolitan area sometime in the next 50 years (the experts will tell you we are long overdue) it seems like the following links might be of interest to you.
Earthquakes:
The U.S. Geological Survey has what I continue to feel is the best information on earthquakes around the world. The link will take you to a map of Asia. Clicking on a red, blue or yellow square will give you more info on that earthquake and how far its epicenter was from Tokyo. Lots of other good stuff on this site as well.
Weather et al:
In the right column of the Japan Meteorological Agency are links to information on Earthquakes, Typhoons, and Tsunami warnings. Since we sit atop three tectonic plates and are officially included on the Pacific Ring of Fire. You can also keep track of volcanic activity in Japan.
General News:
NHK is going to likely be the best source for news of happenings in Japan. Their main English website is http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/ . You might also want to check out The Japan Times at http://www.japantimes.co.jp/.
